Ready for an epic adventure? From the iconic sunrise at Mount Bromo to the surreal "Blue Fire" of Ijen Crater, discover why Indonesia is the ultimate destination for volcano trekking.

Indonesia sits directly on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it home to more than 130 active volcanoes. For travelers from Europe and the US, these aren't just mountains—they are living, breathing giants that offer some of the most surreal landscapes on Earth.

If you’re seeking a life-changing trekking experience, here are the three iconic volcanoes that should be at the top of your bucket list for 2026  and 2027.

1. Mount Bromo: The World’s Most Photogenic Sunrise

Standing in the middle of a vast "Sea of Sand," Mount Bromo is perhaps Indonesia’s most iconic volcano. Even at a relatively modest 2,329 meters, its dramatic caldera looks like something from a sci-fi movie.

The Experience: Most travelers start their journey at midnight. You’ll take a 4x4 Jeep through the dark to reach viewpoints like King Kong Hill or Penanjakan.

The Highlight: Seeing the sun rise over the smoking craters of Bromo, with the towering Mount Semeru erupting in the distance.

Pro Tip: It is surprisingly freezing at the summit before dawn—often dropping to 40°F (5°C). You can rent heavy coats from locals for about $1–$2 USD.

2. Ijen Crater: The Rare "Blue Fire" Phenomenon

Located in East Java, Ijen Crater offers a visual spectacle that exists in only two places on the planet.

The Experience: The hike usually begins at 1 AM. After a steep climb, you descend into the crater to witness the electric-blue flames created by sulfuric gases igniting upon contact with air.

The Highlight: Watching the sunrise reveal a massive, acidic, turquoise-colored lake. You’ll also witness the incredible resilience of local sulfur miners who carry 70-90kg loads up the crater.

New Policy: Starting in early 2025, entry fees for Ijen are paid via QRIS/non-cash systems.

3. Mount Rinjani: The Ultimate Challenge

For hardcore trekkers, Mount Rinjani in Lombok is the "Holy Grail". At 3,726 meters, it is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia.

The Experience: This is typically a 3-day/2-night journey. It involves trekking through lush jungles, steep rocky ridges, and loose volcanic sand.

The Highlight: Reaching the summit at dawn for views that stretch all the way to Bali and the Gili Islands. You then descend to Segara Anak, a stunning crater lake with natural hot springs.

Logistics: You must hike with a licensed guide and porters, who will incredibly carry your tents, food, and water for the entire trip.

Essential Volcano Trekking Gear

Proper Footing: Trail running shoes or hiking boots with good grip.

Layers: Lightweight base layers for the day and a windbreaker/down jacket for the summit.

Headlamp: Essential, as almost every volcano hike in Indonesia begins in total darkness.

Health: Be aware of altitude sickness and check the Indonesian Center for Volcanology (CVGHM) for current activity status before you go.
