"Every Friday, same time, same table," Emily repeated, the words hanging in the air of the warm cafe. Amir was busy serving a new wave of customers, leaving the detectives to their thoughts and their cooling chai.
"A discreet meeting," Karim noted, stirring his tea. "Someone who didn't want to be seen. A woman in a large hat and coat could easily hide her identity."
"Or a very deliberate man," Emily added. "The 'Keeper of the Veil' part of the cryptic note keeps bothering me. 'Veil' has connotations beyond the literal garment. It suggests something hidden, a secret, or a cover-up."
They decided to stake out the cafe the following Friday, but they needed to act now. They didn't have the luxury of waiting days for the next rendezvous. They needed more about the person, not the meeting.
"Amir seemed reliable," Karim said. "Let's see if he remembers any other details. Did the person use a phone? Did they carry a bag? Did they pay with cash or card?"
They waited until the cafe quieted down again. Amir was happy to talk, eager to help the respected scholar's case.
"Cash, always cash," Amir confirmed. "And a black leather portfolio bag. Never a phone visible. They were very careful."
"Did they ever order anything specific?" Emily asked, trying to find a behavioral pattern.
"Always a single espresso, strong and black, and a slice of lemon drizzle cake," Amir said, nodding. "The same thing every single week."
A very specific order. Emily made a note. It wasn't much, but routine was a fingerprint of the mundane.
Back at the station, the laptop from Zavian Croft's flat was proving to be a treasure trove. The forensics team had cracked the password. Croft was a man obsessed with the manuscript, his digital life a mix of brilliant academic research and paranoid rants against the "modernist agenda."
"Karim, look at this," Emily called out across the investigative room, pointing to a document on her screen. "Croft wasn't working alone. He mentions 'my partner in truth' in several encrypted emails."
The emails detailed plans to "expose" Al-Jamil and disrupt the interfaith event. The partner was referred to only by the codename "The Keeper."
"The Keeper," Karim said, his face tightening. "It fits the note and Amir's description of a mysterious figure. Croft has an accomplice."
The emails indicated that 'The Keeper' was responsible for surveillance and logistics, while Croft handled the ideological attack. They were a two-person operation with a shared, extreme agenda.
"They talk about 'the drop' point," Emily highlighted a sentence. "It’s a location, not an action. The coordinates match a storage facility in East London."
"They're likely hiding something there, or even Al-Jamil himself," Karim concluded, a new sense of urgency in his voice.
They quickly briefed DCI Hicks, who mobilized a tactical unit. The mystery had a new location, and the stakes were higher than ever. The coffee shop meeting had given them the what, and the laptop the where. They were closing in.
